Full Version: Where in the world did my socket go?

I heard it go "tink, tink, tink" down into the engine well, but it didn't hit the floor. Did it melt? Will it just randomly show back up in my toolbox later?

Any help would be appreciated.

Holy crap. Guess I left the door open. smile.gif How have you been?

Depends, what were you working on, where did it go, and (most importantly) what size socket was it?

I find that 13mm sockets are prone to evaporation. When you lose them, they never come back. Heck, when you don't lose them you still lose them. They just vanish. Sublimation I believe. 10mm sockets seem to suffer the same fate, though they seem to take longer to vanish. It's a bit odd since they have less material, you'd think they should dissolve (evaporate, etc) at a higher rate, but that's not the case in the real world...I have no clue why.

1/2" sockets are virtually interchangeable with 13mm and yet they seem to vanish at a much lower rate than even the 10mm. I think the sublimation gods have issues with SAE measurements, not really sure...it's just a theory.

And don't even get me started on tools you return to the MAC dealer...who then quits. You have a better chance of finding your 13mm socket than ever seeing those tools again....ask me how I know?

Aren't you supposed to be coming back to Columbus for brew pubs and shooting ranges (not in that order) sometime soon? Preferably when it's not winter....or maybe in the coming spring.

I to have lost more 13mm sockets. I've actually found one underneath the hood of the car a year after I lost it. My waverunner was a pain about losing sockets, bolts, etc. under the engine in the bottom of the hull. I refer to it as
Narnia.

Yeah, what'cha working on? Our new Caprice has more socket and freshly-removed-tiny-parts cubbies than ANY car I've ever worked on. The duct to the air cleaner is a corkscrew-shaped waterside like contraption that you can loose 4" diameter headlight plugs down and into some nether region of the front bumper cover. Ask me how I know!! banghead.gif

10mm 1/4drive sockets are the big losers for me - they'll end up the Kmember.

magnet on a stick will fish stuff out.

Thank goodness it wasn't. I got a good giggle out of it the other day and then figured I'd repost it when I saw this thread.

My under radiator unibody section has eaten it's fill of 10mm (and below) sockets, as well as the OEM air box hold down clips/latches. sad.gif

I'm pretty sure my '89 Formula had quite a collection of sockets on the back side of the radiator air inlet. They fall through the hood latch hole and are never seen again.

Just take it for a drive and wait for the next tink tink tink!

I left voicemail and you never returned my call.

No one would recognize me now ...
Gotten fatter, long greay beard, drive 110" V-Twin and have plenty of suppressed weapons and ammo.
