Full Version: '16 GT350's vs '15 Z28

What would you pick and why? They show photos of the 350's on track but don't list the track or any specific times. I'd like to see Randy Pobst compare both 350's to the '16 Z28.

"Despite the Z/28's massive torque advantage, it's no quicker than the GT350R. They're pretty close to even—which is exactly what you'd expect given their similar weight-to-power ratios."

I'd take the z/28 motor all day hp is for chumps torque is what moves cars

Pass them both with a Z06! 2thumbs.gif

I really like the GT350R aesthetically, and a screaming, high winding, flat plane crank V-8 is a thing to behold (hopefully, it has a proper TR6060 behind it instead of that problematic China junkbox).

But a better (and more fair) comparison would be the LIGHTER 6th gen Z28 and the potent Stang, IF and when GM ever releases it, and IF it is NA instead of the boosted stuff they only seem to do lately. sad.gif

EDIT: I read the R&T article on this car, and it stated that they are using a TR3160, 6 speed Tremec. gr_confused.gif

Is this just an old 3150 with updated synchros/stronger internals, and with an extra cog added on, or a whole new gearbox??

It does save ~25 lbs. over a TR6060, or Magnum.

Not when you've got a close ratio transmission and a good power band.

Street, I'd take the Z28. Track car, Z28. Race car GT350R.

If you have either of those cars below 4000RPM on track, you better be on a warm up/cool down.

...and overheat a lap later.

No guarantee the other two examples wouldn't, either.

The new supercharged Z06's have major heat soak problems, the naturally aspirated Camaros and Mustangs do not. I've personally seen a new Z06 struggle to keep cool during a lapping event in the summer months. Why GM chose to ruin that car with a supercharger is beyond me.

It's because 99% of people who buy those cars won't ever see a track.

Could not agree with you more on the above.

Is it totally impossible for them to get more NA power out of the AFM/DOD LT1s, while satisfying the; EPA, CARB, etc.??

If not, then a 550+ HP NA LT1 should be the powerplant in the C7 Z06 (and even the new Z28 again IF that is ever going to happen), with all of the current body work/aero/rolling stock, and even better yet seats, in as LIGHT (and decontented) a package as they can get away with and still be street legal. wink.gif

True, but let the gold chain poseurs, and 'waxers' buy either the base cars, or if they need some 'exclusivity', the boosted ZR1 if and when that is released.

I can only imagine that air bags in every seam must be the law these days, 'cause I can't see how any Driver would want a 200# seat that's full of air bags. There's a LOT of weight in crap like that. Make 'em lighter, and the performance, mileage and emissions compliance will follow.

But that's just me.

Your user name fits that comment perfectly smile.gif

Just saw this on Facebook.

"flat plane crank" is just marketing hype you realize? I know what it is, and recently read a lengthy article on why it doesn't matter (it is likely actually worse than a cross plane), it says the valve train strength is really what allows 8500rpm.

Yes, it IS marketing hype, and possibly weaker than a cross plane crank, but it DOES also make some hellacious sounds when wound out though. smile.gif

Let not go off track its either one or the other. IRL I would choose how I already have that's a C5Z.

I'd be quite happy if the LS7 made its way into a Z/28-type model of the 6th gen. That motor is still a gem.

To answer the OP, I'd have the 350R if it were my money. 5th gen is just too big and heavy.
79T/A
Z28 for me. It has all the intangibles: Dry sump, carbon ceramic brakes, spool valve dampers, huge sticky tires. Both cars are heavy pigs.

^^^ABSOLUTELY!

But sadly enough, given GM's current penchant for ONLY putting BOOSTED, AFM/DoD, LT1 variants into their top performance cars, that is probably what a 6th gen Z28 will get. sad.gif sad.gif
