It was pretty humbling to me when I realized after my first couple of track events that my driving sucked. It still does, but its better.
The one thing I've seen over and over and over is concentrate on the line. Its all about the line. Always the line. If you don't recognize the line, know where you are vs the line, you can't ever get fast because you don't know where fast is. Once you know the line, then you can begin to build speed, and alternative lines (for passing and for avoiding being passed)

Sure sure, car control is good, reflexes and intuition are great...but if you have all of that and you're off the line its no use. Some old guy with no reflexes left, and bad sight, and old tires will woop your ass...because he knows the line and always has his car on it.
