Full Version: Eye bolts for harnesses

I just finished installing a 6 pt rollbar and harnesses and have a question about the eye bolts I'm using (for quick disconnect type snap ins). It seems when screwing them in to the stock belt locations they are a little wobbly until they are tight, and one that I was tightening (with a screwdriver through the eye - maybe a little too much torque) spun on me. But when I put the stock bolt back in it still snugged down very tight. So it seems that the diameter of the eye bolts is a little smaller than the stock bolts and the threads seem a little finer too when looking at them. Anyway I wrote the guy I got them from (soloracer.com - local) and he says they are the same ones used by Bell, G-force, etc, they are all the same, and has never had a complaint, except Porsche guys have to use some kind of adapter with them(?). I assume most serious folks here are using regular bolt ins and not snap ins/eye bolts, but does anyone using eye bolts know of some that fit better? I can get these fairly tight, but clearly they are not the same bolt as stock-

May have just answered my own question. The bolts I got in my "snap in kit" are G-force brand 1/2" x 20mm, but they also sell 1/2" x 50mm with a big washer and a nut on the back so you can put it clear through the floor and secure it with a nut. I would still probably prefer an eyebolt that fit correctly though so if anyone knows of something out there please let me know-

The seatbelt bolts are metric and the proper eyebolts are not easily found.

I usually thread them through.....and tighten them.....and then use BIG washers and a nut on the back side....thus the stock threads don't do much...

I did what he did.

The proper eye bolts for these are non existant. When I went through tech. at the PE130 we went round and round about this. I used the eye bolts for the inner most belts but was force to use a grade 8 metric bolt on the outer most belts because there is no way to put a backing nut on the eye bolt for those without removing a rocker panel.

If anyone knows where to get the RIGHT metric eye bolts PLEASE let me know.

McMaster Carr had some high strength eye bolts in the proper size, but I don't recall the rating. I posted about them before but I cannot remember if it was here or LS1.com.

I don't know if McMaster Carr has the right bolts, but I've been very pleased with their service.

Thanks for the link, I found the eye bolt section and there are literally several hundered eye bolts to choose from. I'm going to figure this out but I need a little help:

1. The ones available in metric thread are available in Plain Steel | Zinc-Plated Steel | Type 304 Stainless Steel | Type 316 Stainless Steel

- Should I be avoiding stainless? I guess it depends on the load rating-

2. They are available in several load ratings - anyone know the minimum load these should be able to handle? (an M20 handles about 6000lbs for example)

3. Metric sizes available are: M6 x 1 | M7 x 1 | M8 x 1.25 | M10 x 1.5 | M12 x 1.75 | M14 x 2 | M16 x 2 | M18 x 2.5 | M20 x 2.5 | M24 x 3 | M27 x 3 | M30 x 3.5 | M36 x 4 | M42 x 4.5 | M48 x 5

-Does anyone know the size off hand of our stock bolts? If not I will just take one down to lowes and get it measured.

I think most of the eyebolts are zinc plated steal for protection. Regular stainless hardware is notoriously soft, somewhere around grade 3 or maybe 5. I've heard that grade five is strong enough for belts, but please don't quote me on that. I have no idea how ARP gets away with making their stainless so strong, it boggles my mind. A 6000 lb load rating really doesn't say much since that is telling you about the static loading, I doubt you make them tight enough to hold 6000 lbs all the time. The shock loading will be higher but you should pay more attention to the pressure the material can handle, in psi.

FYI, I drilled holes in my floorboards and used the large washers that came with the kit. I know the NHRA requires large plates to be welded in also.

I think they are 12x1.75. I didn't use the stock mounting holes and used the backing plates with bolts not eyebolts.
