Well, trying to gut everything out behind the dash with out pulling the dash has turned into quite a chore. But thats another story and if your bored you can read it here:

Anyways, while tearing everything apart I came across 3 little black boxes. One of them is marked "body control module" and the others don't have any real markings. Does anyone have ay clue what these are for and if they are something that can be thrown in the trash?

I don't know what you have/have not working in your car, so it is hard to tell you what you can junk.

I can tell you the BCM is out of my car the others are probably the VATS and the "Power Memory" module (forgot its name).

I went to Shoebox's website and looked all the photo pages.....he has pics of all the modules in there and where they came from....spend an hour or so there and see if that helps.

The only module Christine still has is the brain that sits in the engine compartment above the heater core (well, above where the heater core would be). All the others are long gone and their functions have been programmed out with lt1edit. Or is it the other program? Hell, I can't keep track of it all.

I say yank 'em! But know that anything that has to do with security you must program out or else you'll have fun gremlins, like the one where the car will run for 3 seconds then cut itself off because it thinks it is getting stolen. Just try getting a car onto a trailer when that is happening! Fun....

Also forgot to ask. how can I get the airbag out from underneath? Any ideas?

I found 2 bolts that loosened up the carrier it sits in but I think there are 2 more on the top side I cant quite get to.

I had to open up the "trap door" in my dash to get the air bag out....I was just careful, and pried it open....that should let you get to the upper bolts

Retained Accessory Power Module

Well, I figured out what one of the boxes is, I think.

You know of anyone that has the same kind of site for an LS1 car? One of the boxes on that site shown as the "keyless entry reciever" looks alot like my BCM. I may be wrong. I'll have to take another look tonight.

but there were 2 boxes on the Pass side and 1 on the driver side. the BCM and another were on the pass side and the drivers side appears to be the retained accessory module. what the hell is its mission in life? Power the seats and stuff?

I think "retained" is the ability to keep certain things like the radio on for 20 minutes after you shut off the car, or until a door is open.

Did a little searching over on LS1tech.com and so far the results don't look good. It appears that I am going to have to keep all that crap if I still want the use of my windows/doorlocks/headlights.

Since the car still gets driven on the street I kind of need those items.

...like I said......I didn't know how much stuff you wanted to work....

But if you want to street it from time to time.....and have stuff work....I wouldn't get rid of ANY of that stuff....just cause you headaches.

Agreed. If you are still driving this car on the street then take things out carefully. If you get the factory manual and become intimatewith each and every wire you can lose the items you don't want and keep the items that you want. Knowing the wiring will be useful in the future when you want to remove everything to make it a dedicated track vehicle.

We stripped the Camaro in a couple of different sessions. If I had it to do again Iwould have purchased everything we needed then had the car down for 6 - 8 months and taken it apart then put it back together again. If we do another race car this is the way we're going to go.

Of course I just bought an '89 325i that I'm making into a track / street car, so we'll probably end up half-assing that too. At least I can talk like I'll do it right in the future.

Whee! You guys have it easy. I just did the same thing... but twice to two cars in the past week. Transferring the entire contents of a 99 SS into an old ghetto 94 V6 Camaro is harder than I thought.

I believe you that it's a pain and I think the worst thing is keeping everything striaght as far as what goes where. I've done under dash wiring swaps before and all I can tell you is block out a whole day to do it. If you do a little here, a little there, you will never remember how everything goes and in the end will use more time trying to figure it all out then just killing one day.

As far as the air bag question, I just took mine out today. Two 10 milimeter bolts are under the mesh that keeps the air bag flap from shooting off into space. At the bottom behind the glovebox door are two more of those little 7mm bolts. After those 4 were out, a nice 15 pound bracket/airbag assembly fell out onto the floor.

I also took the drivers side one out and spray painted where it once was. It's nice having a racecar.

AH HA! I knew you could drop it with out removing the dash! thank you sir! I fought with that thing the other night and finally just gave up. I didnt notice the 2 10mm bolts under the mesh.
