Full Version: What to do Before Welding?

I searched to no avail. Just a quick question. I am a little concerned that welding might do something to the PCM. What do I have to make sure it disconnected or whatever in the car before welding? Anything? Tia

I've just disconnected the battery ... sometimes, not even that ...

No issues to date ...

Never had a problem either....

ialways follow the rule of having the shortest distance between the ground and the head. with nothing in between .for examlpe ypur hand or electronics.

I've never had a problem as long as I have a good electrical connection on the welding clamp, but I would pull a lead from the battery and unplug the PCM. I've only welded on older cars to date, but for the literally 4 min it takes to undo a battery lead and undo the PCM it's worth not having a problem. Remember you are sending a lot of volts through the body when MIG welding.

You're better off playing it safe. Unhook the battery, and the PCM. I have also neglected to do this in the past, and so far haven't had any problems, but if you leave them hooked up then there is a definite risk. I always try to unhook them, the only reason I didn't was because I simply forgot to.

Thanks for the info guys. Its probably best I play it safe and disconnect Batt. and PCM. I don't need any headaches banghead.gif . I thought there might be a possible no-no keeping those things connected. Because of the the electricity that will be grounded the the chassis.
But I fully acknowledge the fact that it has been done before w/o issues everything connected.
Thanks again for the help deciding what I should do thumbup.gif

I am a little late adding a reply, but it sounds like you are going to make the right decision. Where I work we run into this on manufacturing equipment on a daily basis. Definetly disconect the battery and the computer. Also as was previously stated put the ground as close to your work as possible. I have seen thousands of dollars in damage from a ground that was poorly located and a 2 minute weld.
