Full Version: Can a bad wheel sensor cause SES light?

In a moment of potential stupidity, I cut and removed the wiring to my right-front ABS wheel sensor. Now, after driving for a period of time, I see the SES light illuminated in the dash. Could the lack of speed feedback from this sensor cause this? I have no diagnostic tools or I would check the code myself.

Thanks.

I forgot to plug one of my front ABS sensors in after working on my car and the SES light came on. When I pluged the sensor back in the light went away after a little while.

It should illuminate the ABS and BRAKE lights. From my understanding, the SES light is reserved for emissions-related issues in OBD2 cars.

[edit] Keith, I see your car is a '95, so it likely could be illuminating the SES light.

Yes, this is an ODB-I car. Since the ABS module has been removed, the Brake and ABS lights are on all of the time.

I guess that was pretty stupid. I need to re-attach this so that I have a functional SES light.

Thanks.

Shouldn't. The SES light is for the powertrain, the ABS INOP light is for the ABS. I just had an ABS failure last week, and only got an INOP light, no SES light.

Just a coincidence I'd think. Of course you could scan the car and find out for sure. smile.gif

I just took a quick look though all the PCM codes in my tuner software and Sam is right, there is no SES light code for the ABS, so it must have been my ABS INOP light.

There are SES codes for theft deterent system not working properly and the traction control not working right just for reference. I found a code #1659 that just says "Refer to Service manual", that's a helpful code right there. blink.gif There is also a code that is supposed to light up your MIL light when the MIL lamp doesn't work. rolleyes.gif

on my '94 I forgot to connect the sensor when I replaced the bearings. I got an ABS INOP light but nothing for the SES. on my '95 the ABS doesn't work (I don't know why nor have I tried to fix it) and the ABS INOP light is on, nothing for the SES on this one either.
