I am thinking about buying a new hood for my 95 LT1.

With the high cost of fuel and the bulky size of a hood. Shipping is very expensive.

I did some measuring and a stock hood might fit in the camaro hatch with the back seat down.

The Lt1 hood is shorter from front to back than it is wide, so if you turn it 90 degrees and point the front of the hood toward the left or right fender it should fit. Due to the odd shape I don't know how it would ride or if the hatch could be closed.

Has anyone tried this with a stock or nearly stock hood?

Will it fit with the seat down and the hatch closed?

I happen to have a stock sized hood sitting in the rear hatch of the race car at the moment. It sits nicely in that area. I'll try to move it around later to see if it will actually go in there. My current inclination is that it will not, but that's just a guess. I'll move it around later when I get home and see if it will shoehorn in there.

Doesn't appear that this will work. Best method was putting it in sideways (points that would point to the rear of the car pointed towards the driver side instead. This went in pretty far, but I don't think the second pointy part will go in. I'd say you should find a friend with a truck and borrow it.

Glad it was the carbon fiber hood and not the stock unit that I was trying to get in there.

So the hatch would not close with the hood in as far in as you could get it?

Carbon fiber is bound to be a big help with the weight.

I have located a hood that I want, but round trip drive at 20mpg and $2.00 gas would be roughly $177.00.

I should be able to get it shipped for less, but damage is always a problem, and with today rates I am not getting anything reasonable yet.

So I wanted to see if I had any option of carrying the hood in the car without getting a truck.

Is that a VFN Carbon hood you have?

I was going to order one but they were tell me that it would be as much as an eight week wait. Claimed the military and the Iraq war was causing shortages and they couldn't get it built any faster than that. Seemed like a lame excuse, but I have heard good things about their work.

The hood just plain don't fit, any way I tried to put it in. Of course I'm dealing with roll bars, but I think that even with a stock interior there's no way a hood would fit back there.

The hood was made by Alan Blaine who has a shop at Infineon. It weighs about 6 pounds and cost a pretty penny. He'll make you one, but shipping out there might be pricey. It is a really nice unit though. We just have to figure out air intake since we've been running an ss type hood for the last couple of years.

Figure out a way to get me some nice, cheap field side 50 yard line Rams tickets for a game next season and if you buy a hood from Alan I'll figure out a way to get it shipped to you.

On a related subject....ask Alan about the time we tried to get my stock LT1 hatch out of my 3/4 ton Chevy shortbed...I think it took us about 1/2 hour with the shell on there! That thing would just plain not lay down in there!

A friend of mine, who post on here under the name Return Road Apex, was able to transport a LT1 ram air hood in the back of his '94 Firebird. I will point him to this post but you may want to PM him to see how he did it. There may be differences in fitting a firebird or camaro hood in the back.

Just saw this and replied to the PM. I'm suprised you remebered that Neil, that was a while ago. FWIW a stock or ram air firebird hood will fit in the back of a bird with the seat down and the hatch closed. It is necessary for it to be turned sideways. I would think a Z28 would fit too, simplly because it wasnt that tight of a fit on my car and the only area in which the Z28 would be bigger is the headlight cutouts, not a max width or depth.

Sorry if my data was bunk. I put that thing in there a number of ways and it didn't seem like it would ever fit. I'm glad someone set the record straight, and I hope all goes well.

I can guarantee you that an E36 3 series hood won't fit in the trunk of an M3. But I bet it would fit in the trunk of an F body.
