Full Version: WTB: Cheap 17" wheels

Racer X
I'm tired of living in the stone age trying to race on my old 16s. I need new autocross wheels.

Appearance and style is not a factor. They just need to be structurally sound and the right offset. Well...since my budget for this is basically nonexistent, they also need to be CHEAP.

I'm located in NW Arkansas and not afraid to drive (within a few hundred miles each way) for pickup.

SELL ME YOUR OLD, UGLY WHEELS! biggrin.gif

*EDIT* I'm looking for 17x9s. Sorry for not being clear in the title.

Yeah I saw that in the other thread.

I need a set of 17x9s though.

If I get the wheels from the above post, I'll have a set of GM 17 x 9 (SS/ZR1 type) wheels available for sale. They're ugly, but they're straight.
Racer X
Thanks for the heads up. Let me know...

It sounds like you and robz71lm7 need to buy two sets of 17x11/17x9's off eBay and split them up into like sets of four.

Good luck.

That guy on ebay OEwheels also sells a set of 4 17x9.5's. They said if I called them that they would sell me a set of 4 17x11's. I just need to get off my butt and do it.

AFS, however, wouldn't do a full 17x11 set through ebay and calling them jacks the price way up. OEWheels is cheaper anyways.

Why do you want 17x9's? 17x9.5 are a lot better for 275's. 17x10 would be the best for that tire, but hard to find at a decent price.

For me...17x9 = 17x9.5. I see these two interchanged so often that I've forgotten what these cars actually came with.

Anyway, right now it's not a big enough difference to worry about, at least for my thinking and level of competition.

Affordability is a much bigger criteria for me at this time.

If you can find them, C4 vette wheels are a good choice as well, if you can find a set. They are 17x9.5, light weight and cheap. They're not that pretty. But I think they look fine painted black....

Yup, they're on my list as well.

I'm not sure what dollar amount you consider cheap, but in June I called Billy Graham's in Alabama, www.billygrahamscamaro.com , and they have orginal style and speedline style WS6 rims for $150 each used. The rims come primarily from wrecked cars so they check the rims for true before they ship. As my rear rims are 17x 11 speedlines, courtesy of Wheels America, I wanted a stock pair to mount my 275 Nitto Drag Radials on.

If you really want to make sure the rims are true, they also have about 100 speedline take off rims from '02's that have about 5 miles on them. Apparently the company stripped and remounted the tires and sold the take offs to Billy Grahams yard. I've considered buying a set of 4 in case I ever want to show a car, but I have greater need for $700 at the moment.

They have been good people to deal with, the few times I've needed parts. I am kinda glad I don't live near them as I would need a second job for all the parts I want to purchase!!

P.S. I'm not dis'ing any sponsor as I don't think any of them have such an inventory of used parts; I'm just passing on information.
Racer X
I've actually been meaning to call them for a price. You've now saved me the trouble. Thanks.

My budget, if you can call it that, is $300 or less.

$150 each for junkyard wheels doesn't make much fiscal sense when I can get a set of four brand new ZR1 knockoffs from EBay for $355.
robz71lm7
My current race wheels are '89 Vette wheels 17x9.5". They're ugly, but they only cost me $200 for all four.

I think I'm just going to wait t make my 17x11 move until I can afford real race wheels like Fiske or CCW.

Check some of the corvette forums and/or look for C4 autocrossers/road racers.

I think Trackbird has a set of C4 rims available. smile.gif

I started to post that, but it seems to depend on the day (one day, I'll sell them....the next day I feel like keeping them, etc). And, I need boxes to ship them in.

Do they have tires on them? If so here's what I did. Cut out circular cardboard flat for the wheel/tire face and ductape it to the wheel. I did this when I sold my 16" salad shooters as race wheels. A UPS label on each face and they arrived fine. Note: this may not work for really nice wheels.

No tires. And, they are round and "solid", but have the usual blemishes, scratches, etc of track wheels.

Heck, you can even do what I did to ship my last set. Set 2 tires face to face and tie them together with cheap rope or duct tape. Then, put the shipping label on.

I used DHL, and their price for each wheel separately was around $35 per wheel. But, for the 2 taped together, it was like $40 per pair. So, it only cost me $80 to ship a set of 18x9s with 275/35s.

Yeah I thought I had a set of sawblades in St. Louis but it turns out they were the 17x8 - 17x9 combo.

Then I won an auction for a set of ZR1s on Ebay the other night from a seller in OKC. Freakin' guy backed out of the sale because he didn't like the no reserve price he got. Should've reported his butt to Ebay.

Won a set of '92 Corvette wheels on Ebay. Paid a bit more than I wanted but I'll finally be on 17 inch race rubber next month.

Okay, got a set for ya. 4 straight and solid 17 x 9's (or maybe 9.5's, I'll have to check when I head to storage, but they're all the same size). 200 plus shipping work for ya?
