That was quite the outtage (since 5pm-ish yesterday for me). Wonder what happened?

Thanks Guys! Sorry about that.

I sent this reply to a few (who e-mailed me) to explain.

QUOTE
I'm going to copy and paste this into the next 15 e-mails, so it's not specific to anyone (sorry), but here's the scoop.

At about 11:30 am EST on Sunday, we started the upgrade process specified by Invision to move us to the latest software. The upgrade installed and ran the update script (which was supposed to convert the database to the new version) and it trashed the database on the server. Not to worry, we have full backups (multiple in several locations that were pulled right before the upgrade started so nothing was lost), but we have to upload them to the server again and my hosting company has limited the script time to 300 seconds per script (and it takes far longer than 300 seconds to update a 90 meg database), so we've broken it down into sections (93 of them to be exact) and are uploading each of them, one at a time, until done. The issue is, each one takes just about 5 minutes to execute. So, I started on this at 7pm (EST) last night and ran updates/installs until 2 am. The person assisting me (no names, blame me, not him) has been running updates since early this morning and we are up to file 65 out of 93. I hope to have the board back up and on line later this evening.

Unfortunately, since the upgrade wouldn't process, we are restoring the board to the "old" version (exactly as it was) until we can work with invision to correct this problem (with the update script).

Sorry for the downtime, I was hoping to unveil a new version of the board for everyone today (new as in updated, not really changed), but things don't always work out as planned.

Thanks guys, I'm working on it.

Kevin / trackbird (your humble admin)

Obviously this part is no longer correct.

Sorry for the down time, sometimes things just don't go as planned. We'll work out the details and hope to get the new version working in the future, but I have no timeline for that upgrade at this time.

Thanks and my apologies for the downtime.

I can't let Kevin take all the blame for the down time.

It was me who was attempting to help him with the upgrade, and helping to get it back up when the upgrade failed.

I feel personally responsible for the site being down, and would hope that all of you accept my sincerest apologies for the problems.

I'm sure we'll try again in the future, but I have a plan to keep us from having to restore the database in 100+ parts (in the end, it was over 100 parts). But I don't know when that will be.

Kevin and I will work that out I guess, assuming he still wants my help with it, and with luck we won't have the same problems next time.

No problemo! Being an admin is not always a piece of cake! wink.gif

hehe, you need shell access to run mysql.... You might be able to make your own php.ini file and increase the timeout as well.

No worries; glad it's back up - I can't afford to lose the good info and tech support that's available from this board!

Thanks Lee, I didn't mind taking the heat (not that there's much heat wink.gif ) on this one.

I appreciate all your help and efforts and will gladly accept your assistance (if you're dumb, er, uh...crazy enough to volunteer..... rotf.gif rotf.gif rotf.gif rotf.gif ) with the next attempt.

Lee has dedicated/volunteered far more of his personal time to this process than I can count (or I'm trying not to) in an effort to make this an even better (more current?) place. For that I'm greatly indebited to him and his family for allowing me to take up a perfectly good Sunday afternoon and keeping him busy with the board issues.

Thanks Lee, I guess the first round is on me (though I may have to buy more than one drink.gif ). beerchug.gif

Unfortunately, shell access would not have helped us in this case.

The problem was in the way we backed up the database. We used "extended" inserts, which combined all 70k+ posts into a single insert statement. That proved to be too much for the server to deal with.

So I had to break it up into more managable chunks of 1000 posts each.

Next time, I'll leave it with a single insert per record and it should run better.
