I know I read somewhere there was a reason why they had to have the "hash marks"on the 60s' grand sports for Le Mans for some reason. Can someone find a source or tell me why they had them?

thanks

I think it had something to do with identfying the Chevy sponsored 'vettes from other 'vettes in the field. I guess the car number wasn't enough? I know I read it online somewhere, but don't remember and can't find it right now. It was the same place I got dimensions for mine.

This article mentions the hash marks; refers to them as being used to help identify the original GS cars on track. However, nothing is said about differentiating the cars as factory from the privateer entries.

I imagine that the marks helped separate the 'Vettes from perhaps the Cobras of similar color when viewing the cars from a distance on track.

Here's another link:

It doesn't explain the marks either (probably have to buy the book).

awesome. thanks rob, many thanks. the first one must have been where i read about it since i remember reading that article. fwiw the stupid corvette books i do have don't mention it, and one of them only has a pic of a GS and doesn't even talk about it....

I do believe has marks weren't a corvette exclusive item. Race teams used them back in the day to differentiate between cars as they often had the same paint scheme. sometimes one, two, or three etc marks on various cars. Corvette just revived them w/ the GS to hark back to the original GS.
