Rally...the reason I started liking cars...

That, and NHRA top fuel drag racing are the only motorsports my wife will sit and watch. She doesn't like the announcers they use for IHRA races. She was quiet upset when OLN grabbed the Dakkar Rally from ESPN a couple of years back. That was her favorite event to watch.

While she co-drives with me (and does very well) in CP, and has gone to the 1/4 mile strip a couple of times, she generally does not like watching motorsports on TV. We really like the in-car camera stuff. :-)

I'm already there , its only like 60 kms from house.

Is it just me, or do Rally fans act just like Nascar fans? They both go to cheer for the crashes. They both love to watch cars make the same turn over and over again. And neither has more than 5 brain cells (Rally fans because they stand on the outside of curves - Nascar fans because they were born that way)

i don't know about the "just there for the crashes" with rally fans. i'm not saying that that isn't a perk to the experience, but i've seen plenty of occurences where the crowd got all hyped just by the car/driver impressively maneuvering whatever portion of the circuit it was on.

and beyond that, rally fans seem to enjoy crashes so that they can, for the moment, become course workers by flipping the cars back over and waving down oncoming cars of the impending danger.

I just finished watching the last 45 minutes. I think what I was interpreting as cheers were actually more like gasps or exclamations when they crashed. And, the watching 1 corner thing is the same thing that any corner worker does.

But, I still can't get over them standing on the course, in the middle of the road, on the outside of turns, with their backs to cliffs, etc. After seeing what some of those cars do to telephone poles, trees and stone walls - a crowd is nothing!

Oh, and I love the "flip the car over and keep driving" philosophy!

i think one of my favorite crowd/car interactions was that older man that was on the inside of a corner who ended up practically placing his hands on the hood of the car as it slid by right in front of him...then of course he just sort of casually walked across the street after it passed. i couldn't imagine what that experience was like!

I agree it's unsafe at all to be standing that close watching Rally stages. Although I've never been to a WRC event myself, I'm quite sure you can't stand that close anymore nowadays, though. I think the stages are cordoned off, so the spectators can only get so close. An you'll hear a whistle from the marshall when a car is approaching (like you can't hear the car huffin' and poppin' from a mile away).

In Rally you don't have to watch the same corner. You can walk around. Like watching a road course event at Watkins Glen or Lime Rock. You bring your chair and set up camp.

And WRC drivers are better than any other drivers!
