Yeah, so, I'm looking for some ARP Wheel studs for 2 day delivery (need them for this weekend) and I click, click, click to the check out, enter all my info, and there is this $11 HANDLING charge.

Yeah, I guess *technically* it's free shipping, but, what? do they think that we are all stupid?

They lost a sale from me because of it.

Summit is the same way-$9.99 handling IIRC. Yes it pisses me off but a lot of places do it. I'll still continue to use Jeg's though. Even before their 1-2 day shipping change I got items the day after I ordered. I wish they would charge actual shipping since I often need just one or two small parts.

I suspect it may be the same kind of deal you see with the Ebay wheel sellers. They price the wheels dirt cheap to get the sale, and then charge an absurd amount for shipping to make it up. I've seen as high as $189. Basically, shipping has become a/the profit center.

Ebay sellers do that because eBay takes a % cut of the perchase price without shipping. It's thier way to get around paying eBay so much.

Yup, that's why you see items listed for a buy it now of $.99 and then $19.99 shipping......

I understand things like this on ebay.. to keep the sellers costs down and such.. I have no problem with that at all.

It's just that Jegs 'advertises' free shipping... you get my point.

The mass retailers like Summit and Jegs get a volume discount on their shipping, as they do from their OEM purchasing volume, but the shipping is still not free, so they have to charge a handling fee per order. Small guys like my shop have to charge a little more for product, but really get nailed by shipping, especially air. I stock this kind of stuff for my normal race car prep business and am happy to make some retail revenue from it, but costwize I better serve the west coast where UPS gnd is only a day or 2 away.

CJ, your best cost will be from a local TX retailer that is within 1 or 2 days of you via ground shipment.

Just did this dance for a couple xmr12 rod ends. Ended up going with Summit, just because I knew they'd get here quickly, but I agree, the "free shipping, $10 handling charge" stuff really burns me. Then I said the heck with Summit and went to Jegs and their handling charge was more... :-)

Just charge me the cost of shipping, don't try and fool me. I'm not an idiot, I know stuff costs money to get to me.

Thanks for the input on the local retailer, but, my local guys want $30 for a pack of 5, plus tax. ThunderRacing is 'close' (Nothing is close to me, punch in 78550 into google maps), but they are still very close to you on price.. for a couple extra bucks, I'll give it to a FRRAX sponsor.

I realize that a good portion of my expense is because I didn't plan very well, and I got stuck ordering on a short week as well.

I still found it cheaper to buy most of my stuff from Jegs even with the rediculous "handling charge" than buying locally and paying tax. It does tick me off.....that they basically lie to you about the shipping charge.

Good grief guys..... I'm speaking as an ex-employee and not as the admin here or a "friend of the sponsors", etc.

It costs a bit of money for boxes, packing, shipping, etc. From my time there working the phones, I can tell you that nobody complains about the $9.99 when they order an 18 lb intake and a 6 lb carb, a few packs of ARP bolts, etc. When the orders are 45 lbs of stuff, to your door in 2 days for basically $10, nobody complains a bit. When you need a $5.00 part though, it's not as nice. One of the vendors I order from has a $3 or $4 charge if your order is under $25. This vendor DOES NOT want to mess with someone ordering a $.50 part for a rifle or a brush to clean a rifle, etc. They aren't shy, they let you know not to waste our time ordering a small part (unless you want to pay extra for it) and they still charge me $4.50 to mail it USPS and $8.75 for UPS (and the fee). It's the nature of mail order. When you are shipping 4,000+ packages a day, you've got your hands full. I don't see this to be much different than ordering the day before and paying $35 to have something overnighted. If you plan ahead, you avoid such things. When you need something small because you forgot to get it, or put it off, you're going to pay somehow to get it to you. The handling fee is only an issue for orders where you think that shipping would cost less (and it might).

I guess my point is, plan ahead and don't place small orders. If you need to get anything shipped 2nd day, doesn't matter much what it is, it's probably going to cost $8.00-12.00 in freight. So, if you pay freight, or the "handling charge", does it really matter?
