Full Version: TPiS LT1 Ported Heads

I have a set of TPiS Ported Heads. I bought them on a motor that I used in the race car. I had a VERY reputable NHRA engine builder rebuild the heads and give them a good valve job and then ran them in my car with the matched TPiS ZZ9 cam for a season. Roughly 5 race weekends....no street time.

Never dyno'd it, but it was probably in the neighborhood of 350 RWHP with this....new upgrades.....same but 'o meter today is 400 RWHP so that is my best guess. All stock bottom end and top end.

The following is from TPiS's web site:

These heads are factory castings that are completely inspected before any work is started. They are then given to our porting wizard. We install a 2.00" intake and a 1.56" exhaust valve. We use only Manley Premium Stainless Steel Valves. Each head is ported for max performance and given a 3 angle valve job. Then they are cc'd, milled, flow-benched and assembled with new guideplates, springs, and lightweight retainers. These are a great value in a stock casting.
LT1 Flow numbers in .100 increments for the stock castings are as follows: 58, 115, 177, 214, 214, 214. Our ported LT1 heads with a 2.00/1.56 valve flows the following 70, 145, 203, 241, 265, 277. As you can see we get some great numbers out of these heads, and at $1250/exchange it's a tough head to beat.

They charge $1250 for the service....plus a core. Say $200 for a good core off of eBay...so $1450 new.

I would like to get $900 obo out of these heads.....

Lemme know cool.gif

I really need heads for my new motor, but I don't know of many people running the TPIS heads and was really leaning towards the A.I. CNC heads.. Do you have any pics of the porting work thats done? I only want to buy heads once as you can imagine.

Thanks

The TPiS heads were very nice...the machine shop I took them to...a big time drag race shop.....was impressed.....but I replaced them with an Ai head/cam package and gained probably 40 HP. If you are gonna want to "buy heads once" and get a set that you won't ever replace, I would go with Ai or Lloyd heads. These are more of a good value for those looking for a good bump in performance, but don't want to lay down the $2-3K it will take to make a good set of Ai heads.

I can get some pics...I will try later this week to put some up.

I have the Lloyd Elliot package on the ORR car -- hard to beat for the money as you get a matched cam as well --but it will still set you back $2k.

$900 is a bargain on this set Randy... plus they are run in. My first set blew on the dyno because a hole in one of the water passages.

Yeah...I know it is a good deal....I am just too busy to try and "sell 'em" and just need some garage space....and with the way my engine needs are going, if I ever build the engine I need....I will probably go TFS or AFR and these will never be used again even as spares....

GOOD DEAL to someone with a budget! beerchug.gif

Randy-
What kind of HP do you think these heads are capable of? I have been looking at these heads for awhile now.

Also if you could get me some pics that'd be great!

Thanks!

I don't have a dyno number. Here is what I have:

I originally ran the car stock with all the bolt ons.....I dyno'd it at 299 RWHP

My new engine...same bolt ons.....rebuilt stock bottom end....Ai head/cam.....I dyno'd it at 399 RWHP

The middle combo....which was never dyno'd (it ran well, and they dyno near me closed).....was rebuilt stock bottom end....rebuilt TPiS heads and CC 227/233 cam......was very close to in the middle.....I would say 355-360 RWHP.....

As for potential...I would say a matched/better cam and a dyno tune would get you may get you to 375-380 RWHP...

Here are pics of the heads from when I installed them new:

More pics in this album:

My Webpage--Engine Build pics

The current pics would be the same.....just dirtier... biggrin.gif

I will try and upload some pics tonight....

Hell.. forget the heads... what I really want now is one of your "brake duct kits"!! Thats a great idea using that plate and nozzle system..

HEH....it is a small wonder what a little time and a lot of fab tools can do for you...... biggrin.gif

If you are really interested, Louis Gigliotti was taking requests to build something very similar for folks on here....sort of as a one off kind of production....he may or may not be too busy to do them anymore.....and as I remember they were not cheap...but you could call and ask...

....mine are hand made by me, so they WERE cheap!

Ditto! You know that you need a new set tongue.gif

Things I need from Randy(if I had $$$)

Heads! Does the cam come with these?
17x9.5 wheels if they clear the 996 setup
Brake cooling ducts smile.gif

EDIT: The LG ducts were over $400, way up from what he(louis) posted.

Your in luck:

1. I have a choice of cams CC 227/233 or TPiS ZZ9 I can let go for $50
2. Wheels clear the 996 set up with the spacers provided in the kit
3. Trust me $400 for those custom ducts IS CHEAP...when my fabricator buddy was helping me build mine..he said he STARTED at $800 for something like that, and he hadn't done full time race car work in a few years by then.

do you have the full specs of the CC 227 cam? - lift and lobe sep?

I may be interested in the heads and cam for my 350 LT1 in my '69 Camaro street car.

Just curious, how much would you sell the zz9 cam for? How many miles? Thanks Joe

I dunno....$45....

The miles are unknown. I bought it in a complete engine from a guy who bought the cam and heads as a package and installed them on his car. He said the car/engine combo was low miles as it was a weekend only autocross car. I took it out and never used it as I had the CC cam.

I took a look at the ZZ9 cam....it has scoring pretty bad on 2 lobes and some scratches.....it could probably be reground, but I don't know if it is worth it or not....you might want to pass....

thanks sir for your honesty. Thanks anyway, Joe

Just to chime in here. This cam/heads combo ran steady 109 mph trap speeds and one 110+ mph pass in my full weight 93 Camaro A4 car. The motor was replaced with a S&S built forged 383 with a CC 305 cam and Lingenfelter CNCd LT4 heads and afterwards the car ran a 109 mph trap speed.....go figure.

The heads came from Myron Cottrell when he was still hand porting heads before he bought his CNC machine and they flow crazy well. Unless Randy has decked them they only had 0.020 deck surface removed so you should have no intake alignment problems. I can't recall the exact chamber volume on the heads but I do recall that with an Impala gasket I was right at 10.9 to 1. A full thickness GM LT1 gasket would be about 10.4 to 1.

And although I am not certain of the mileage, I know that I only ran them for a year or so. I was mostly autoxing at the time. I spun a rod bearing and went to the 383 at that time and opted for buying a supposedly trick set of Lingenfelter LT4 heads and intake. I would have made more power keeping these heads and cam.

Hey Perry....nice to here from ya! Hope all is well!

I did not deck the heads. S&S just hot tanked 'em, put a good valve job on 'em, and new springs and that is it. They said they were some real nice looking heads when I had them do the work, and they see some good stuff in that shop.

Merry Christmas everybody.... beerchug.gif

If you still have these, and are willing to let them go for $800, I need to find out where my tuition reimbursement is from work and I will be able to pick these up from you. I should be able to find out this week.

shoot me an e-mail to my work address at michael.leaf@wellsfargo.com

Thanks again man!

P.S. Do you have casting numbers for these heads? I just want to make sure they are the pre-96 heads (non 571? castings)

Thanks...

OK. I actually got home real late last night and forgot.....will do tonight.

The casting numbers are:

10207643

4182

The 6 and 3 above are hard to read and could be a 6, 8, or 3.
