So who is from around Houston?
I'm guessing I'll be moving there by the end of the year if the interview goes well next week.

New Orleans . . . but I make a couple Houston events per year (usually). I've seen Karen there a few times. Also Mark Madarash shows up at some events (and kicks my butt).

I'm in College Station, about 2 hours north of Houston. I go to a lot of Houston Auto-x events (Houston SCCA, PCA, BMW). You should make the trip up to College Station and come to a Texas A&M Sports Car Club event. We have a grippy concrete, and a decent sized area to play. Texas World Speedway is a blast as well.

Excellent!
That means you have 3 months to find yourself a CMC (or AI) car as NASA-TX season begins 1st weekend of February.
There are three events next year at the Houston local track you should be able to make (HPDE too)......

Funny, I say the same thing about DFW. :-)
I'm in Houston. Autocross all year 'round. We have MSR-Houston, a couple of draaaaag strips, and freeway access to road courses all over Texas.
Good luck, and welcome to Texas!
It can be cold in February, but the last threat of freezing (that is ~30 degrees F) is about Feb 15. Frost threat is usually done by mid-March. Heaters are used to keep the fog off the inside of the window, and A/C is NOT an option.

Im from houston but right now at school up in college station (about an hour away) and I always go down a lot. What side of town are you thinking about?

I don't know where I will live yet, need to figure out where I can park my enclosed trailer... as it is now I park it at work, but that won't be possible at this company since their office is downtown.
As for CMC, as much as I would love to and I might be able to afford it with the new position, I think I might better try to be a little more financially responsible at least for a couple of years. I did good this year until my transmission in the truck died.

Yes, but I mean it.
MSR-Houston is a rice patty. I will not go back there.

And I do, too! I haven't left ANYTHING in DFW I ever need to ever go back for.
As others have asked, who you working for, and where is their office? That might help determine where you live, although, I have come to the conclusion you live where you want, and drive to work. If you move close to work, you are almost guaranteed your workplace location will change soon. :-)

Oddly enough I really enjoyed my time in the DFW area made it down to S/A and Austin, enjoyed both, never made it out to Houston though.
By March it's pretty alright in TX and FWIW I lived there for three years and my car was driven regularly, sans A/C

Then you will probably want to look to live southwest, off the Southwest Freeway (IH59), or out Hwy 288, south of town. Either really suck during rush hour. Hopefully you can work a flextime deal with your employer, or start your day early.

I live in NW Houston, Cypress exactly. PM me if you have any more specific questions.
Traffic is gonna suck nuts everywhere from 6:30 to 9:00 in the morning. But, since your office is near the Beltway, you should be able to live anywhere on the West side of town w/o too bad of a commute.
If you're single and can afford it, live inside 610. You'd commute against the traffic flow and would be closer to the real goings on of the city, especially the night life.
If you've a family, Sugar Land is really nice and Katy isn't bad.

They will pull you over and are buttheads IF you have a JV address/sticker! Ask me how I know.
Hmmm, I'm beginning to detect a pattern here. :-)

Heh, we lived in JV. We had a truck that had been repaired, including replacing a broken windshield. The body shop simply peeled the inspection sticker off the old one and affixed it to the new window. _One_ of the edges was curled a bit.
I took the truck to visit a friend. Passed a JV cop going the other way. He practically spun the car around in the street (Jersey Drive). I was getting out of the truck, when he came sliding into my friend's driveway with the lights flashing. You'd have thought I was deliveing a ton of coke to my friend.
He got out and asked if I knew why he was there. Of course, I didn't, and said so. He told me the inspection sticker had been altered. I looked at it, noted the curled _corner_, and mentioned that my Dad had recently had the truck repaired and the windshield replaced. He told me the truck needs to get a new inspection, that that sticker is now illegal. Luckily, he didn't peel that one off, but we got the truck inspected again.
Amazing, but true.
