Do stores like AutoZone, NAPA or O'Rielys take used fluids? I need to dispose of some antifreeze, oil, and trans fluid.

I know in TN they take oil. And I always take my trans fluid there too.

Not too sure about the antifreeze. I think the service stations are supposed to take it, but I haven't tried it yet.

I did put pet-safe / environment-safe stuff in the last car I changed the antifreeze in.

I know for sure that you can take the trans fluid & oil to AZ/OR/NAPA. They'll have you dump both into the same waste oil container at the store. As far as anti-freeze, you may have to search your city website & find out where you can take hazardous waste in for disposal. I've never seen AZ/OR recycle anything other than oil.

Autozone here in NH takes used oil. Our local transfer station will take the old antifreeze and batteries.

In MD not to many stores take used fluids. However the counties have a lot of recycling bins for used fluids. Check your local counties website, the county I live in puts a few used oil bins in parks and until you look for them you don't notice them. In fact I used to drive 15 miles to dump oil until I looked at the web and found an oil bin 3 miles from the house.

Take it to Lane's. He may charge a small disposal fee.

You can also try the oil change places. A place about 1/2 mile from my house takes my oils for free. I have also used AutoZone before.

It's been a very long time since I've changed antifreeze in a car, but I'd expect the same places that offer coolant changes would dispose of it for you.

Here in San Antonio there is a Household Hazardous Waste program that accepts nearly everything (coolant, oil, fluids, tires, batteries, and other non-car stuff). It's free if you pay your utility bill to the city public service. I found it by just typing "San Antonio Recycling" or "San Antonio Household Hazardous Waste" in to Google. You might try the same with your city.

In the Houston area, most of the oil change places will take the antifreeze. Last time I was there to leave antifreeze, though, they asked me if it was the green stuff or the orange stuff. Seems they had a problem with the orance stuff. Luckily, all I had was the green.

The same places, as well as the parts stores take oil, trans fluid and gear oil. Some may require you to 'register' with them, but should take it for free. That is the case in Texas. Unfortunately, they only take it in quantities of 5 gallons, or less. That can sometimes be an issue for me.

O'Rielys in Euless takes my oil without charging me........but I buy my other vehicle's oil from there as well.

<shrug>If that's what the government says, I assume the town waste facilities or your septic system can handle it safely.

Yeah, I've always put antifreeze down the drain and run a bunch of water down with it.

I read about putting antifreeze down the drain but our officials say not to because there are leaks in the sewer system. autozone and advance auto only take 5 gallons at a time but they don't charge anything.

Easy, back yard.....dig hole.....pour.......cover.

What do people do with used brake fluid beside use it to strip paint off of old furniture?

That goes in my watse oil heater too. Makes a really scarey noise if you start getting to much gas in the tank, when the burner lights off!!!
