Watching "Love the Beast" on Speed channel got me thinking about it again, usually the idea doesn't pop into my head until mid summer when it is way too late to prepare or participate.

Anyone interested in trying to make a run at it? I have experience behind the wheel and navigating in TSD rally's, so I feel comfortable in either seat.

I know afew guys that have run this event. Great time but plan on a BIG budget and support.

I doubt there would be any way I could pull it off this year. 9 months just isn't enough time for the appropriate build and fund raising. From the reading I have done it doesn't look like they change the rules much from year to year. The current rule book is listed as "2010-2014"

Anyone around central Jersey interested in pursuing the idea for 2011?

It's supposedly quite an undertaking. Plan to go see it once, then enter and try not to place DFL, then run again to try to do some good.

Yeah, I am looking into going up and spectating this year. Most likely fly to whatever the closest airport is and just rent a car to go watch.

From what it looks like it would call for a solid car(roads look pretty rough in some sections) and a few people to help between stages(apparently you are allowed up to 8 crew). I certainly don't expect to go up there and run in the open division first try. More than likely go into the closest to stock class.

It will be fun to see and figure out if I can make it happen. I plan to make the most of 2010 to see if I cna make it happen in 2011.

Take good notes please...I'm interested in running it one year. But I don't think I'll get the luxury of watching one year and then going.

Tons of pics, talk to the crews, etc.

How many miles does the crew drive? Adequate area for paddocking most places? Paddocks have power or no? How many legs? etc etc...
I did rallying for a while and this seems like the ultimate rally.

I'm sure it'd CRUSH the budget for a solid year or more, but man, that is ONE event that I think has to be on the list.

Mkay, for whoever gets to go and spectate and mingle with the teams, these are things I'd like to have an answer to


1. Stage lengths and condition of roads expressed in ride height requirements
2. Stage lengths and speeds to get an idea of the kind of fuel mileage (or distance needed to cover) between fuel stops
3. Support vehicles....open? We were specifically told at the CRNC one year our chase vehicle COULD NOT take our trailer and we had to
leave it and then LATER found that a lot of folks ignored this and brought their trailer. Guess where the parts were that we needed?
4. What are most folks using for support vehicles? Pickups? RVs? Are they hauling trailers with them?
5. Are they staying in hotels every night? Sleeping in their tow vehicle if it is an RV?


I'll have more long before the event...

I have a long list of questions and such I plan to ask as well as paying attention to their message boards and the sites of some of the teams.

Things I already know:

* Max speed allowed in stage is 124mph, transit zones must be taken at locally posted speed limits or there will be time penalties
* There is also a spec fuel supplier, must run pump gas from the approved supplier(sponsor) and the only fuel additive allowed is also from a sponsor
* Vehicles must be street legal, registered and insured.

It is looking like I will be able to attend nearly the whole week, just gonna have to miss the last day or two.

Another thing I have already noticed from the pics and notes, bring a rain coat. In the fall it rains some amount almost every day.

Yeah, I've read through the rules and got most of it down... I think ;-)

What type of tires are the fast guys running?
What is the total distance traveled for the entire event? What is the breakdown between Special Stage and Transit?
What type of fuel is available and at what cost?
Is the fuel measured the same? (USA = RON + MON / 2 )


I've rallied a good bit before and understand street legal and keeping it cool on Transit stages and all :-)

Huge thanks...I'm way jealous you can go watch...I'm sure you'll have an awesome time.

Do the rally school. I did the rally school / test day on Belle Island and learned a lot about what not to do. Don't jump a Challenger 40' over a jump and destroy the oil pan and lay 7 quarts on a beautiful island. Confidence is scary and is why rallies don't generally go over stages more then once.

Crew travels a lot if they wish to spectate as well...they just need to know how much time they have to get to the service stations and lunch which usually are schools or local meeting areas so the locals can get autographs and photos. They will want Hero cards!!! The hospitallity is awesome!!! There will be 3-4 hotels as you travel depending on the routes.

Most trailers don't belong as they get in the way at service stations. Small open ones seem to be OK. Hotels and the some places arrange to keep them there. If you can't pack what you need in a truck you've already taken too big at penalty on the day to even worry about being competitive. Usually there are contracted towing companies if anything major happens.

Evening paddocks are mostly Hockey / Curling areas, so depending upon entries space could be tight and you will not be next to your tow vehicle...The evenings are always open the locals to come ask questions and get autographs and pics.

Roads are mostly paved rough and loose gravel. Lots of country back roads and small jumps. I would not attempt to run the GT1 car. If you are serious you will require skid plates and extra shock travel.

You'll need to mount the navigators seat as high as possible, have rally radio communications, and rally computer.

Tires: you will want a good all around High Perf tire. I Don't remember the rules but everyone had thier choice...the open class and some real tarmac tires while most others ran 1 season radial. Durable tires are key...one flat and forget it for the stage/day, so when the navigator says "don't cut"...don't CUT the corner (or tire).

Entries are pretty inclusive for meals.

Look out for Swamp Donkeys (aka Moose)! On the only "highway" on the island there was a sign that said 697 Moose realated accidents this year and the year wasn't over.

Driver and Navigator should be CPR / Medical certified.

I'm sure I can come up with more...later.

Well, my codriver and I have both stage rallied together a good bit....would we still benefit from the school?

<crosses 'don't jump challenger 40' off cliff' from list> ;-)

Show up with how many hero cards? Do they allow selling of merchandise (shirts..)? Giving of merchandise?

My thought at this point was crewcab longbed truck (with campershell) and open trailer. I will bring a spare diff assy and while I know the time to swap would kill that stage, if I go that far I'm going to do anything I can to simply finish the event.

No, the GT1 car would stay home unless it was all paved. :-)

Why nav seat high? Most times you want it low.....

Yes, when we ran stage rallies previously we had intercom and rally computer. No worries there.

CPR medical....damn good idea and one I had not thought of. We did carry a first aid kit and a 'spill cleanup' kit also.

Have you run the event before or attended or what? HUGE HUGE thanks for the info and keep it coming.

What % would you guess of stage roads are paved? Gravel? Dirt? What else do ya'll have up there???? Clay? Mud?
