Looking for one of GM's third gen's Dana 44 even if it is just a housing as long as it is in good condition.

Is that more commonly referred to as the Austrailian 9 bolt? No. There was a Dana 44 built for the 1989 Turbo Trans Am (as I remember) and available as an aftermarket part from GM Performance Parts. At one point Summit Racing was carrying them. I remember looking at them in the catalog (I had my '89 Formula at the time and blew up one rear axle in it) and they were about $2200 or so. Then I got a catalog one day with them on clearance for about $650. I called first thing in the morning and they were already sold out. Since it was a factory installed part, it's update/backdate legal. The factory installed the 9 bolt, the 10 bolt and the Dana 44 (in limited numbers). There were actually 3 factory rear axle options for the 3rd gen...but the Dana is really rare. |

Mark It's crazy that back in 83 GM knew the 7.5" rear was a problem, yet they continued to use them instead of making a stronger rear like the Dana 44, even through the higher up years of the 4th gens... |

They had TWO good diffs, the Dana and the 9-bolt, yet still chose to use the 7.5". I'm guessing the accounting department at GM all drove Mustangs!! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/banghead.gif)
