After about three years off the street, and two years off the track, I went down today and registered the 96 Camaro and it is now once again 100% street legal. Lights work (no horn, don't tell anyone). Hell, AC still works.
Never mind that roll bar, and the big empty spots that used to be rear seats, and radio, and spare tire. Pay no attention to those wires behind the glovebox. Those big fat tires, yeha what about 'em...doesn't everyone have big tires? And yes, everyone should have a fire extinguisher in the cabin with them, along with their 5 point harnesses, and of course who can get along without a proper electric system cut off within reach of the safety crew, uh I mean, Highway Patrol. Yes your honor, my car has a muffler...most of the time. The car is still too low, it hits even medium size gravel in the roadway. Speed bumps....forget it. Most driveways...forget it. But I'm too lazy to raise it. At least it is really cool...... Next post may be how much the ticket was for......wish me luck. bock |

This topic is so appropos....I just dusted off the '96 Formula "spare" car and took it on an 80 mile trip. This is the car I got because I thought the '94 race car was not going to be saved after my crash at T-Hill when two different cars hit me. Fortunately, mostly due to Alan Blaine's good work with the cage and my safety gear, that car was saved and so I have this spare. It is a pretty low mile chassis at about 70k, motor we put in is about that too and has tons of power. Alan sent me a B&M Ripper he had in the race car because someone had trashed the stock shifter - with the nice Delrin knob it shifted just like the race car, and I had a fun trip. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) The car is all stock, has a decent alignment and tires it came with. Very nice daily driver!

You guys remind me of the first time my wife got in my race car. This was before I put the harnesses, big tires and the stiff suspension on it.
This was at a race track, but just a slow paced DE style event. She did not want to do it, but I told her I would take it easy, which I did. Pulled out of the pit slowly, and she says, screaming, "this #$#$%^&* thing is too loud". She had a helmet on, and we were barely above idle. Out on the track, I increased the speed a little, the pit comes out about 2/3 up the long straight which goes into a big sweeper. We are going maybe 50 mph into a 110mph corner and she started screaming "Let me out, let me out" while I'm saying I can't , I can't. Then she starts with the "slow down, slow down" and I say "I can't, I can't" (cars coming fast from the rear). At this point, we are doing about 70mph The screaming continues till we reach pit-in whereby I pull up short and let her out of the car. She jumps out, throws the helmet at me, calls me 10 or twelve unrepeatable words and walked away. I've always wondered what would have happened if I went full speed. |
