Well, it's not in an Fbod, but I'm on a LeMons team that's silly enough to think a truck is competitive. Actually, it's not, at least in it's current configuration. While we have as much, or more mechanical grip than most of the cars out there, the 20R Toyota motor bolted to a 3-speed automatic just doesn't get out of everyone's way very fast. Still, it's fun to drive, and my wife and I helped bring it home to the IOE trophy at last weekend's 24-hours of LeMons event at MSR-Houston. We were running a solid 2nd in class and high teens position overall when a rocker arm decided it had had enough. Who puts cast aluminum rocker arms in an engine, anyway? We were out for a couple of hours at the end of Saturday's running, but had the thing ready again to meet Sunday's green flag, and the truck never missed a tick all day long. We had one short black flag session ("Okay, what did you do?") due to 3 wheels off (we were flagged because they thought we went 6-wheels off, but didn't). Other than that, we just made laps.
Some may not consider it real racing, but I can tell you we were driving the wheels off the truck, and as one of the owners of the garage we paddocked in said: "Wow, they are _really_ racing out there!". His gear was still packed in his trailer from the Runoffs, so we had more space in the garage for our crap to leak oil in. Anyway, it was a real hoot, as always. Some day we'll put something with some power on that track and really scare ourselves. Here's a link showing what we were driving: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/tag/yeehaw-its-texas/ We brought only the truck this time. Due to time constraints, and the fact that some of our out-of-town team mates had created their own teams in their area, we didn't bring the Isuzu, and the Van was busy getting a fresh set of hopefully unwarped heads. The van, a 97 Venture with a killer 3400, should be running at the Dallas event in December. |
