You see, I'm fitting my rims on my car and I've found that I need less than 1/8 of an inch to get them to clear the calipers. Five good sized flat washers ( one for each lug) would easily give me the clearance I need. Is this a really bad idea, dangerous, whatever?

Both actually. I doubt the washers would give enough surface area to keep the wheel from shifting around. It shouldn't be too hard to find a cheap 1/4" wheel spacer which would be infinately better/safer.

I've already got a "proper" wheel spacer (some thing from ebay) The thing measures 3/16, but I need to use longer lug bolts, with it and I barely catch the center hub. I'm not fussy about either of those scenarios. With washers, I at least get a nice firm fit over the center hub. Is the concern that the washers will crush?

In any case, I surely don't want to go as high as 1/4 inch and then lose almost all connection to the center hub, because that idea makes me very uneasy. So perhaps I should get a 3/32 steel spacer made up? Is mild steel adequate for this purpose?

There was a 1/8" spacer made for 3rd gens. You can still get them cheap from gmpartsdirect.com. Mine are in another city at the moment, but if nobody posts the number by the time I get them back I'll let you know.

I would not use the washers. If you look at the back of your wheels, they usually aren't flat. In fact, they are usually relieved a bit directly under/behind each lug.
