Thanks for the stars Stan!

Gene...it will be AP or CP legal depening on what weight I want to run. I'll have to add a BUNCH to run CP unless I use a smaller motor or something. However I'm sure it'll make it to some cone-dodging events! As well as DEs, roadracing and open road racing.

And oh yes, I've thought about making quickbrackets for lights and a horn and being able to drive it on the street. Heh heh.

Thanks guys.. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

I live in San Antonio. Five guys (WDMS Crewdogs, two of them on this board) are showing up Friday night for a two-day thrash. With any luck I'll be at a dyno shop the following weekend doing break-in and baseline tuning.

After that, I'll be pulling every string I can find to get some track time and get the suspension/aero/brakes sorted out. If I get a weekend or a day up at MSR-C you wanna come help? The car will be setup with a DL1 and an LCD dash (DASH2) and I've got IR tire sensors (only 3...so I gotta do one tire at a time) so hopefully I can dial in the suspension pretty quick. But there will be tons to do...reliability first, speed second (normally safety first, but I've got that covered).

I really really want to do well at the UTCC. I've always learned new tracks pretty fast, but this car is gonna be a whole lot quicker than anything else I've driven (s2000, atlantic, ff, asedan, ITS, etc). Hopefully I can get on top of the learning curve quickly and lay the f-body smackdown at VIR.

Warren Motorsports Complex is 15 minutes from MSR-C. The place is at your disposal if needed.

FYI ... MSR-C has a shop there with a dyno if needed and Performance Speed Tech is a full service speed shop.

Let me know when you are coming out and I'll be there to fetch wrenches.

Burgers at Grumps is a must.

Shocks from a 911, of course!! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif)

http://www.roadcatalogs.com/store/carrerashocks.html

Evolved mainly from circle-track stuff, very durable and not too expensive. The
good ones are owner-rebuildable and owner-valvable.

Any time you feel like testing out that "learning ability" on a new track, come on over to No Problem Raceway. It's just SE of baton Rouge, or about 6-7 hours from you. There are regular track days with 20 minute sessions for $115 for the whole day, usually on Sundays.

I'd love to!

I know some racers who have played out there and they speak highly of the place. Unfortunately it is a little far for the moment and I have access to some closer places and need the shake down time (and not windshield-of-the-truck time! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ).

However, I'll try and get out there as soon as I can.

Name's Stan, but steve is close (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) . Actually Stan is my nickname, Austin is my real name.
2100 seems to be in line with this tube frame only car.
He is running an Aluminum LSX with C5 corners, shortened tq tube, and diff. He doesn't have a full body, but has some aluminum. The LSX is about 100 lbs lighter than a gen 1. The independent rear might be similar in mass. You have the glass body and I have no idea how much it weights. His is 1980 lbs.

DOH!
Sorry Stan!!

I've seen that car on the Net before. It's Kinsler's kid if I'm not mistaken. Not sure what HP he has but those are some REALLY short control arms. I'd love to run IRS, but at the power/grip I have it'd be iffy and for trans-am/GT1 it is verbotten anyway. Killer fabwork on that car and I'd love to run with him sometime. Wonder what kind of power he has...any ideas? Needs real tires <snicker> (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Yeah, Kinsler kid. About 21 years old and still in college. Built it in one year. Made me very jealous. Many parts of the fabrication were very impressive. The only thing I can really knock him on is not using a tubing bender more. He actually was a member here and sold his 4th gen 1LE on this forum to someone in Texas to fund this project…. It wasn’t you was it?!?

Last year he had a stock Zo6 motor with the injection stacks, so that puts him at maybe 425 HP or so. Over the winter he bought a stroker 427, can’t remember if it was based off of the LS1 or LS2 block, but it should be nasty. I’m guessing about 600 HP. I haven’t talked to him in a while to see how everything went. He was developing a new set of stacks to go with it.

So more grip requires longer arms is what you are saying? He’s only ran street tires that I know of so far. Took me for a ride down a couple local freeways… hang on for dear life.

I'd like to build something like yours or his someday.

Stan,

Thanks for the additional info...wow, 600hp @ 2000lbs in that thing would be a terror! I didn't buy his 1LE, mine are both FStock 3rd gens (insert weak-nut tpi joke here! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ).

Don't get me wrong, I'm speaking in generalities. It is POSSIBLE to get more grip with a stock arm (of course), but the longer the arm the better. They don't run such positive offset wheels for brake cooling! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rotf.gif)

The tires on his car aren't streets, they are r-compound kumhos. Granted, they aren't 710s, but they aren't streets either.

Interesting you mention building a car like mine, several folks have mentioned it recently. Frank (helping me build, lives up the street, been racing buddies for a looooong time, awesome welder/fabricator) and I took a good look this past Saturday at making a copy of my car for him. Mine uses all circle-track parts (ever priced a corner on a riley or a rocketsports???) and really wouldnt be all that hard to duplicate. Derhaag still makes bodies for the 4th gen t/a+gt1 cars or you could convert it to c5 or c6 I would imagine.

Food for thought.

Probably more of a wet dream than anything else. My wife-to-be will probably prevent it from ever happening.

It has to be expensive and time consuming to make something like this, but then think about how much time we spending making something work around the constraints of the existing car. Or how much time and money we spend to make the existing car light. To have a clean slate to make things the way you want would be nice.

Why the positive offset wheels? Wouldn’t that make it harder to have long arms? I just assumed that long arms would reduce the change in IC and somehow make the system more stable.

Positive offset is my front wheels. 12" wide and only 2" on the face side and 10" backspace. That way the control arms can be nice and long.

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=101

And it is INCREDIBLY nice to be able to get to everything fairly simply. I've worked on plenty of production based cars-that-are-raced and as you mention, a lot of it is huge PITA to work around. Additionally by the time you are done, you still have a lot of limitations. Sure it isnt cheap nor is it done in a few weekends, but for less than the cost of a used z06 I'll have a car that will destroy a whole ton of cars (p-cars, f-cars, vette, viper, etc) and it is based on a Coleman catalog.

HA! I always liked the olds bodystyles also but my favorites were the lt1 4th gens and the DeKon Monzas. I actually had two sets of DeKon bodywork when I bought this project and sold them both to help pay for it. For gt1, there is a TON of legal bodies. For Chev it is all gens of camaros, monzas, 63+ vettes, lumina, monte carlo and beretta. Buicks can be regals or somersets, and Olds can be Ciera, Cutlass, toronado and aurora (LOVED the aurora IMSA GTS cars!!!). There there is the firebirds, grand-prixs and fieros. Not all are T/A legal, but they can all run scca regionals and nationals.

I'm just crossing my fingers that T/A makes a comeback.

Me too, I'm hoping they do something that slots between Speed World Challenge GT and Touring. Ponycar only and production based. That would be bad-ass. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/2thumbs.gif)

Something that might actually be on TV. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/nutkick.gif) Also, I don't see the mfr's flocking to AI any time soon. Get the detroit 3 in there fighting it out with their latest offerrings and you could see something that resembles T/A's heyday.

BWAHAhahahahaha

Nice one Alien!

FWIW, the car hopefully fires up in the next day or two, dyno apt for Saturday afternoon and possibly make MSR-C for member track days on Sunday for a shakedown.

Everyone please cross your fingers. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/burnout.gif)

No dyno and no track time this weekend. Driveshaft and oil filter issues crippled the weekend, but in the end they both got resolved and TONS of other stuff got done.

In fact, if I felt a little more loopy I could walk out into my garage, drop into the Kirkey, flip the master, ignition and fuel pump switches and hit the button. She'd bark to life (she sounds SO FRAKKING ROWDY!!!) and I could ease in the clutch, drop the jerico in first and go terrorize the living crap outta my neighborhood....and then go to jail I'm sure.

Anyway, we have a pretty much UN-dyno'd and UN-shook down car. Lots of phone calls to make tomorrow and with any luck we'll be heading to VIR in the next few days. There are only 3 chevrolets entered and the other two are corvettes (a c4 and a c5). If we make it, we'll be the ONLY f-body in the event!

Bored? An update with some pics:

Stang Killer, where do you work? With Ryan? If so, yes I was going to come by but was running out of time and had a buddy of mine bring in the big set (14" wide fronts, 14.5" wide rears) and get them mounted.

Mkay...well....I'm at a loss for words. Really. And I am pretty talkative.

This car is insane. Totally, 100% frakking insane. I've driven some serious machinery. Big hp, lots of grip, big brakes, blah blah blah. It's all crap.

Went to my sUpAR seKrEt test site today and wrung the heck out of the car.

Oh

MY

GAWD

I can't describe it effectively. It was just insane.

So, with a test that showed the car can move under its own power in all four gears, the brakes stop the car and the steering turns the car, we are headed to VIR tomorrow morning. It is likely not to smart to go with an UNsorted car...but hey....sometimes you gotta throw the dice. Long odds, yes, but hey, I wasn't doing anything else this weekend anyway.

It was mostly a dream to drive. I'm writing the long event story now. When the
car is more sorted, I'll bet it will be even more phenominal. We need to change up
some things and she'll be down for a while, but it will all be for the much much better!

Test: http://www.witchdoctormotorsports.com/ch81.htm

Should have the main writeup done tonite or tomorrow.

During the VIR test (Thursday at lunch) for the full course I pulled some
acceleration data from the DL1 and found the car needs 5.1 seconds to go
from 60mph to 120 mph. As a comparison, the C6 Z06 (a mid-11 second car)
needs 7.4 seconds to go from 60-120. If we started at the same time at 60mph,
by the time the Z06 was at 120, I'd be passing through 139mph and less than
a tenth away from hitting 140. (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/gr_eek2.gif)

As you drop the hammer from 2nd or 3rd gear pretty much everything gets blurry
except whatever you are specifically focused on. Takes a while to get used to that.

And this is with no tune, just conservative timing and a little rich. I'll get it on the
dyno and get it tuned right and hopefully find more power.

The official short story:

It was run as a time trial event which means if you go 4 off in any session all your times for that session do not count. The first session also does not count. At the end of the first session, with NO completely clear lap we were fourth overall and 2nd in class. The second session I went off due to a steering rack coming loose (not all the way, just wiggling) at the very end of the session and we had put down times to keep us 2nd in class. The third session I only got a lap and a half when I threw a wheel weight on the front straight and got an evil vibration (at over 150 in the braking zone) that apparently loosened/shook the oil pump pulley and the belt worked its way off half a lap later and I pulled off. I don't think the motor is hurt bad or anything (it spins and makes oil pressure) but I've got to redo the rack mount and the motor needs to come out anyway (slight front trans leak also). Also need to lengthen the wheelbase by moving the pumpkin back (will need longer links, lengthen driveshaft and move watts-link pickup points), change the radiator mounts to lay the radiator forward and vent the hood (downforce baby!) and put on a front splitter. Scratcher V2.0 should be back in action in a few months.

So we never got an official event time and thus a DNF/DNS.

UNofficially, we scared a lot of folks. The car is stupid fast and handles very well and brakes great. I'm stoked as can be and grinned like a baboon the whole way home. It goes from 60-120 in less than 5.1 seconds while a c6 z06 takes 7.5 seconds (and runs an 11.5 quarter). That is with conservative timing and running rich. The brakes are great, the steering is light and has good feel, the handling with matched tires was awesome and the car responds well to wing and rake changes. It is a beast, but not that tough to drive. It inhales pavement at a voracious rate. On the back stretch at VIR (running the long course) I was passing through 165 with about half the straight left and eased out of it as I was out of gear. On the front straight I was past 150 before the first bend. OMFG. In second or third when you drop the hammer whatever you are focused on is fine, but everything else gets blurry. Simply amazing.

I wish we had got a time in the second session as we easily had 2nd place in class, but I'm not all about the woulda/coulda/shoulda. We took a huge risk with an unknown car that had never been ran on a track and we took a long-shot gamble. Sure it would have been sweet had it paid off, but looking at the big picture I'm fine with it. The car survived (no wrecks or damage) and it is a joy to drive. It will only get considerably faster and more reliable as time goes on and hopefully they have one next year and we get invited. We'll go back and redeem ourselves.

We were (as is typical with a new car) making huge strides with minor tuning. Cody diagnosed real-time tire temps and we make some changes to the front end and balance for the third session and even though we only got the lap and a half we were SECONDS faster for the first portion of the track before the oil pump belt ejected. Amazing.

Anyway, the long story will be up soon...but now you know the short story.

I can vouch for the hot temps at VIR this past week-end, as I was an instructor for the NASA HPDE groups.

Got to see this car and all the cars in the UTCC and they were awesome to watch.

From Tommy Archer in a pro Viper Comp Coupe to a prep'd '85 Ford Fairmont station wagon.
