As I understood it, most race teams bought a street car and a BIW. They started on the cage for the BIW and sourced all the other stuff off of the street car. Once you moved everything you needed over to the BIW, you sell off/scrap the remains of the street chassis. By the time you buy all the door handles and little nuts and bolts, you may as well just buy the donor car (or so it seems).
