Smart phone GPS based lap timers Options

Anyone use them? I have an Android phone and have been reading about them.

How do you overlay video on to the app? You need special software? My camera will be a Flip HD.

Trackmaster looks pretty good.

How do you get around having that big Ass phone holder on the front glass?

Please show your setups.

I've heard of an app you could download to your iphone called "Harry's Lap Timer". Coupled with a tomtom it's supposed to work pretty well.

I was reading about this in this month's motorcycle roadracing world) and the consensus was to get an external GPS puck with a 5hz or 10hz resolution - the 1hz ones in everyone's phone didn't work too well for track duty.

TTT. Anyone have some feedback with the iPhone? I was looking at Harry's Lap timer http://gps-laptimer.de/Home.html it looks very capable and only $20 for the pro version. It looks like it can use the camera directly in the iphone for video, the GPS and accelerometer built into the phone, and can integrate with OBD II for engine data (rpm, wheel speeds, voltage, temps, throttle position etc). Seems like it is as capable as a 1000$ Data system that I was looking at a couple years ago but this one is $20. But the GPS is as limited as the phone and they recommend something with a higher frequency (as mentioned by Eskimo).

What I couldn't find so far is how does the phone connect to the OBDII of the vehicle? A quick google search: http://www.amazon.com/goPoint-Technology-O...e/dp/B00336S7KS $99 for a cable.

PLX makes a cable that has a small box on the end and connects to android via bluetooth or apple via wifi. This way you don't actually have to connect the cable to phone while recording. It makes mounting the phone a bit easier. Amazon also sells the PLX stuff. It's about the same price as the cable you found.

A friend of mine highly recommends the Harry's Lap Timer. He uses it in his M3/iphone4* combination. He was recommending it to us, but, unfortunately, we're still running the 'old school' iphone 3, so we're out in the cold, again. I think he uses the lap timer as well as the phone's video capability to video his run and record his lap.

When I get my home laptop up and running, I'll see if I have any correspondence from him, as I think he also had a line on a good GPS for the thing.

I would recommend getting some kind of external GPS if you are serious about using a phone as real data logging. In my AX experience, Harry's Lap Timer by itself, on a iPhone 4S is just too inaccurate. Start and stop points not set well (ie not within 4 feet), timing of runs not within 5 seconds of actual time. The video overlay is pretty neat/nice. IMO, the app is super confusing for just AX use. It's got a ton of option, too many almost.

I have the Google Nexus (one) and I had bought the manufacturer car mount for that model... so it stays in place.
Haven't gotten actually try any of these software, although have been thinking about the trackmaster.
