In the new Popular Hot Rodding magazine, they have a blurb on Autovelocity carbon fiber wheels. They have magnesium centers, and their 18" x 10.5" wheel only weighs 8 lbs, and is twice as strong as a Z06 wheel! (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

wow thats pretty sweet. that price isnt even bad. yea sure its still 6k for wheels, but think about how much some of the fordged wheels cost and how much they weight. how did they look?

They do like nice, and I would beat them up at the track. Ferrari has been using magnesium wheels for a long time, and you don't get much stronger than carbon fiber.

I play softball(im old)sometime's and they came out with a 2 piece bat and it worked great for a while, But as the bat's got older they got loose in that spot.Im sure they thought of this though.

that's great... and price is reasonable for the weight savings.
Some pix would be cool. saving 15lbs on each wheel is cool. Now... might as well find the lightest tires to go on them to really benefit from it. Yoko A032R are 33lbs each. So finding a tire that is around 20lbs would be great. |

awesome.. carbon fiber does have great tensile strength.. but carbon fiber has virtually no ductility(it doesn't like to bend or stretch)... once you pass the tensile strength --BOOM-- there goes that 1500 bucks
so maybe twice the tensile of a Z06 wheel but not even 1 percent of the ductility of a Z06 wheel i'd really like to see those wheels and would be even more excited about seeing one fail |

also carbon fiber can be cut and tear fairly easy, i know a guy who worked at a bike shop and he took out a $2000 trek carbon fiber road bike, to test ride after fixing it he hit an oil slick in the parking lot, layed the bike down and cut a hole thru the top tube. hit got some samples from porshce once and showed me, we hit em with hammers and it laughed, but put a blade to it and it dies.

A couple of years ago, I found a place which sold CF rim, mag center for motorcycles. They looked very cool and were very light. If CF wheels were the same cost as GM factory wheels, would you buy and install them? I would be hesitant to do so. |
